A Fayetteville man who was sent to prison for ripping off elderly shoppers in 2019 and violating his probation for practicing medicine without a license in 2013 and 2014, has been charged with fraud involving an 81-year-old woman who reportedly took him in when he was released from custody in July.
Wright Douglas Gillies Jr., 73, is charged with exploitation of an elder adult through a position of trust, and obtaining property under false pretenses, according to court records.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office charging document alleges that Gillies suggested to the woman that the two go into business “flipping houses.” On Sept. 1, according to the record, Gillies registered Renewed Properties LLC in his name but did not include the woman as a registered owner.
“The business does not actually do anything and has no income,” the probable cause affidavit states.
Five days later, the record states, Gillies took the woman to a local dealership to purchase a 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer using Renewed Properties as the applicant for the financing through General Motors. The record alleges that the woman did not want to sign the paperwork, but was “pressured” by Gillies to do so. Gillies did not sign the paperwork.
