RAEFORD, N.C. (WNCN) — A man whose car was stolen ended up in jail himself after he claimed marijuana found in the car later was his, Hoke County deputies say.
The incident happened on January 19 when a car was stolen in Raeford, according to a Friday news release from the Hoke County Sheriff’s Office.
The stolen car was later spotted at Red Springs Road and Cope Road by Hoke County deputies who then stopped the car
“There was marijuana in plain view and a pill bottle with no label in the vehicle,” deputies said in the news release.
Soon, the man who had the car stolen arrived at the scene and told officers the car had been stolen from the IGA store on South Main Street in Raeford, deputies said.
The victim, Travis Levon Paige, said he went into the store to buy a few items when the car was taken, the news release said.
“Mr. Paige advised that the marijuana in plain view was his,” deputies said.
Hoke County detectives checked the pill bottle in the car and determined it had 42 grams of oxycodone, the news release said.
