Weather Permitting: Seasonal temperatures return to Fayetteville this week

Throw in a handful of tornado warnings and January has been an interesting month for the Cape Fear region.

The month is ending on a more seasonal note, however. The recent string of 70-plus-degree days ended with the arrival of more seasonal air, and Fayetteville won’t see the high side of 60 degrees until Thursday — if then.

Here’s the setup

Weak high pressure is building over the Carolinas, with a brisk northwest flow holding highs in the mid-50s today and Tuesday. Lows overnight will slide into the mid-30s in Fayetteville, below freezing to the north and west.

Tuesday will be sunny, but a bit cooler as high pressure settles in. Look for a high of about 53 in Fayetteville. Overnight, clouds will build, and temperatures will likely stall at about 40.

The clouds are part of a weak system sliding through from the west, with a chance of light rain across the region by Wednesday morning. The system will also bring another shot of cool air, giving Wednesday an overall gloomy look with highs in Fayetteville of about 50.
