Fatally wounded infant left with family after being shot, according to 911 call

A Fayetteville infant fatally shot in December was dropped off with a family member before her father went to the hospital with his own gunshot wound, according to a 911 call released recently.

Five-month-old Brooklynn Crumpler was pronounced dead at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill a day after she and her father, Weldon McKensey Crumpler, 31, were shot Dec. 19, the Fayetteville Police Department said. The father’s injuries were not life-threatening.

According to the 9:51 p.m. call from a woman who identified Brooklynn as her niece, Crumpler dropped the child off at the woman’s Nicky Avenue home after the shooting.

“My brother pulled up. He dropped my niece off. He’s at the hospital now, he had been shot, but now, I think there is blood coming from the baby,” said the caller who later noted she had left the home to get items to help the child.

The dispatcher seemed surprised and asked, “The baby was shot?”

“I think the baby was shot or grazed,” the woman replied.

She said she was returning home after her son called her with an update.
