Yelp names Fayetteville bakery among the best places in the U.S. and Canada for croissants

Fayetteville’s oldest bakery has long been known for its glazed croissants.

Earlier this month, it was ranked No. 11 on Yelp’s list of top 100 croissants in the U.S. and Canada.

According to Yelp, the list is compiled by identifying businesses in the food and restaurants category with a large concentration of reviews mentioning croissants, then ranking those businesses by volume and rating of reviews mentioning the flaky pastry.

At the time of writing, Superior Bakery had 292 reviews and a 4.8-star rating.

“I’m just thankful, it’s unbelievable to get national recognition,” owner Nick Poulos said Tuesday.

The Hope Mills Road bakery, which was founded by Poulos’s father on Raeford Road in 1956, sells thousands of croissants a week, and as many as 3,036 in one day, he said.

Made with layers of dough and butter, the croissants are proofed overnight, making them light and airy. Each morning, they are fried, glazed and filled.

Fillings like cream cheese, raspberry, apple and vanilla custard are sold year-round, and there are seasonal fillings like pumpkin cream cheese in the fall and mango in the summer, Poulos said.
