It should come as no surprise that January in the Cape Fear region was decidedly warm. After all, we had five straight days of temperatures 15-20 degrees above normal, capped by an 80-degree afternoon in Fayetteville.
There’s nothing like that on the horizon as February arrives. In fact, long-range projections are for colder conditions to move in, probably around mid-month.
Here’s the setup
February starts with mild high pressure holding over the Carolinas. Cooler air will arrive this weekend, followed by a storm system moving through the Southeast next week.
For a while, it looked like this combination could actually bring wintry precipitation to the region. Now, however, it looks like the cold and moisture won’t get together in time for the Cape Fear region.
Instead, Fayetteville should see pleasant conditions Thursday and Friday, with temperatures climbing into the mid-60s Lows on both nights will hold in the upper 40s.
On Saturday, a weak front will pass through, dropping temperatures to more seasonal mid-50s across the region. There’s no indication that we’ll see any showers, however. Overnight lows will likely drop below freezing.
