‘With her to her last breath’: Family of slain Fayetteville woman grateful to kind stranger

A Fayetteville woman said she is grateful that in her slain sister’s final moments, a kind stranger tried to save her.

Daeja Dannette Kyes, 24, and a friend were shot Dec. 20 on Tamarack Drive after the two women got into a physical altercation with a third woman around 5:30 p.m., according to court records. Police have not released the names of the other women involved.

Kyes died from her injuries at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, police said. The friend was treated for a gunshot wound to the shoulder, court records show.

‘We did everything together’

DèShay Kyes, Daeja’s older sister, said the duo was inseparable in childhood.

“We did everything together,” Kyes said. “Growing up we shared a room together, we rode the bus together and played together.”

Daeja Kyes was the mother of one child, 2-year-old Jadaci Clark, her sister said. She said her sister was planning to attend school this month at Fayetteville Technical Community College to study phlebotomy.

News of her sister’s death was devastating, Kyes said, but she found comfort in learning that someone tried to help her.
