‘It was not performing’: What’s next for Fayetteville’s rooftop restaurant as it switches gears

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect that Mayor Mitch Colvin and his partners are seeking operators for the space at 229 Hay St.

Just a few months after the city’s only rooftop restaurant and bar opened downtown, the business quietly closed — but it’s not gone for good.

Hay Street Kitchen & Rooftop , which opened in Fayetteville’s historic Kress Building in May, closed last month, part-owner Mayor Mitch Colvin said Tuesday.

While the rooftop bar will reopen as soon as the weather allows, Colvin said, the future of the first-floor restaurant that once served steak, tacos, wings and weekend brunch, is up in the air.

“It was not performing to what we wanted,” he said.

Owners rethink the restaurant

Colvin said he and his partners are seeking operators as they consider options like turning the restaurant at 229 Hay St. into a ghost kitchen, or a restaurant without a physical storefront that sells food for pickup or delivery through third-party delivery apps like Grubhub, DoorDash and Uber Eats.
