Shortly after gunfire erupted at the Lake in the Pines Apartment complex last month, two men were seen running away from the vehicle where a man was shot dead.
Jonathan Christopher Connell, 32, of Spring Lake, was shot multiple times on Jan. 11, as he sat in the driver’s seat of a Lexus ES350 parked in a space near the dumpster in front of building 706.
Search warrants and dispatch calls in the investigation revealed at least six people called 911 to report the 9 p.m. shooting that echoed through the large apartment complex off Rosehill Road. The labyrinth-like community made locating the scene difficult for officers. It would take a few minutes for police to find Connell’s vehicle in the darkness — parked in one of the dozens of spots surrounding at least nine nearly identical buildings.
One of the callers reporting the shooting described the Lexus as having both front doors open and someone hurt inside.
“We heard those gunshots go off, and my husband — he was leaving to go to the store — he said the man is laying in there and he’s dead,” the woman said.
