A pedestrian struck and killed by an 18-wheeler last month on U.S. 301 has been identified as a Cumberland County man.
Christopher Scott French, 29, died Jan. 26 after being hit near Snow Hill Road, two miles south of the city, around 9:45 p.m., State Highway Patrol Trooper C. Oxendine said.
According to the accident report, French was westbound, apparently crossing the highway, when he fell and was struck by a northbound tractor-trailer owned by Kack Enterprise and driven by Jesu Sansbury, 57, of Hope Mills. The 53-foot tractor-trailer was traveling 55 mph at the time of the accident, the report states.
The truck was stopped by a Cumberland County deputy in the 1600 block of Gillespie Street, 5 miles from the scene, according to the report.
French, who lived nearby in the 300 block of Canady Street, was pronounced dead at the scene, the SHP said. Sansbury was not injured.
