Impairment suspected in single-vehicle crash that killed Fort Liberty soldier Saturday

An active-duty Fort Liberty soldier was killed in a wreck early Saturday morning after striking a tree at more than twice the speed limit along a residential road in Anderson Creek, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.

Nathan Whorton, 25, of Spring Lake, was driving at least 100 mph east on Overhills Road when the single-vehicle accident was reported at 4:20 a.m., 1st Sgt. D.L. Hawkins said.

“Probably a little faster, if you ask me,” Hawkins said. “The car was, basically, disintegrated.”

Hawkins said Whorton’s vehicle crossed the center line and went off the road, crashing into a tree half-mile east of Bill Shaw Road.

According to Hawkins, the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office received 911 calls before the crash concerning a domestic dispute in which Whorton was purportedly involved. The SHP expects a toxicology report to show that Whorton was impaired at the time of the accident, the trooper said.
