Allegation of attempted robbery preceded deadly Fayetteville stabbing, court records show

A fatal stabbing last week on South Reilly Road was the result of a fight between two Fayetteville men, in which one alleged someone was trying to rob him, court records show.

Albert David Smith, 56, of Glen Reilly Road, is charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Anthony Powell, 30, of Edgewood Loop.

According to an arrest warrant, a witness told Fayetteville police that at about 1 p.m. June 21, he saw two men, one wearing all red and the other shirtless and wearing camouflage pants, arguing in the 700 block of South Reilly Road.

The witness said he heard one of the men say, “He was trying to rob me,” before a fight broke out. The man in the camouflage pants, according to the witness, struck the man in red with a walking stick, then pulled out a folding knife and stabbed him multiple times, the record states.

The witness said he was just 10 feet from the two men when the incident happened.

Powell was stabbed three times in the chest and died the same day at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, the record states.
