Fire damages Fayetteville crematorium Thursday night

No one was injured in a fire Thursday night at a Fayetteville crematorium, the Fayetteville Fire Department said.

According to Fire Capt. Stephen Shakeshaft, the fire at Rogers & Breece Crematory, 510 North St., was reported at 8:25 p.m.

“When initial units arrived on scene there was fire on the roof of the building,” Shakeshaft said. “It started on the inside of the building and spread to the roof.”

Shakeshaft said the fire was under control by 9:54 p.m. The building sustained heavy damage, the Fire Department said.

Shakeshaft said there were no bodies awaiting cremation inside the building. The crematorium is directly behind Rogers & Breece Funeral Home on Ramsey Street. The funeral home was not involved, Shakeshaft said.

The cause is under investigation.

“It appears to be accidental at this time but we’re still investigating the exact cause,” Shakeshaft said. “There’s nothing suspicious about it.”
