Grant to Benson will aid industry

BENSON — The town will receive state dollars to help a local industry renovate its plant and create jobs.

Benson will receive $150,000 from the N.C. Rural Infrastructure Authority. The money will support Chicopee LLC’s renovation of its 550,000-square-foot plant on Chicopee Road.

The company has said it expects to spend $521,187 on the renovation and create 39 jobs.

Chicopee is a maker of wipes for use in food service, health care and households.

Gov. Roy Cooper announced grants to Benson and 19 other local governments on Thursday.

“Continued investments in building capacity and utility infrastructure are critical for attracting more economic opportunities to rural North Carolina,” Cooper said. “With these grants, all North Carolinians can access a better quality of life and increased economic prosperity.”
