DWI Roundup: Hope Mills man charged after Greenville near-wreck

A Cumberland County man was charged with driving while impaired after he lost control of his vehicle near East Carolina University’s Athletic District.

About 10:30 p.m. Aug. 23, North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement stopped a vehicle at the intersection of 14th Street and Charles Boulevard. The driver was traveling at a high rate of speed and made a left turn from 14th to Charles. He lost control of his vehicle and nearly spun out before continuing to drive, court documents said.

The driver was identified as Thomas Joseph Martinez, 22, of 611 Grand Wailea Drive, Hope Mills. He had red, glassy eyes and an odor of alcohol on his person. A concealed firearm and open container of alcohol were also discovered.

Martinez was arrested and charged with driving while impaired and carrying a concealed gun. He was also cited for reckless driving-wanton disregard and the open container.

Martinez’s arrest was one of 10 for impaired driving recorded in Pitt County from Aug. 18-26. Court documents in the other nine arrests contain the following details and allegations:
