NC released school performance data for 2023-2024. Here’s how Cumberland County stacked up

Cumberland County Schools announced Wednesday that 17 of the district’s 86 schools have been removed from the state’s low-performing list, with data also showing the county’s recovery in academic performance after setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction released the latest performance data for the 2023-2024 school year. The report provides data on student performance on end-of-grade and end-of-course assessments in subjects like English language arts, mathematics and science, according to a news release from Cumberland County Schools. The report also looks at the percentage of students at different proficiency levels, including grade-level proficiency and college and career readiness, the release said.

Cumberland County Schools Superintendent Dr. Marvin Connelly Jr. praised the district’s progress, emphasizing how far schools have come since the pandemic, the release said.

“We’ve seen significant gains in student proficiency, and the removal of 17 schools from the low-performing list demonstrates the success of our educational strategies,” Connelly said in the release. “While there’s more work to be done, we are proud of the consistent improvement.”
