‘Latest concept’: Wawa to experiment with new travel centers

Wawa is considering a new way to sell its products — not by the truckload, but to truckers.

The convenience-store chain is building its first travel center, a larger-than-usual complex expected to serve both truckers and motorists. A prototype is rising along an interstate highway near Fayetteville, North Carolina.

It’s expected to offer “a high-speed diesel fuel court for the needs of professional tractor trailer drivers,” according to a statement from Wawa.

Hoagies on a long roll: Wawa, once known mostly to locals, expanding to a 13th state

Six lanes are to serve diesel buyers, along with 20 fuel spots for conventional motorists. Amenities are to include parking for tractor trailers and a weigh station, as well as “well-appointed restrooms and a pet relief area.”

In another change from convention, the store is to have indoor and outdoor seating areas, as well as a “large open design for the fresh food and beverage area,” the statement said.

The store is to be almost 8,400 square feet, considerably larger than the typical Super Wawa of about 5,500 to 6,000 square feet.
