Weather Permitting: Keep an eye on the tropics

As this week has proven, a tropical system doesn’t need a name to make an impression.

An unnamed system that came ashore earlier this week dumped more than 20 inches of rain close to the coast and more than a half-foot in parts of the Cape Fear region. It was the heaviest widespread rain since 2018’s Hurricane Florence, setting a one-day rainfall record for the date in Fayetteville.

Fortunately, we’ll have the weekend and early next week to dry out. High pressure will build over the Carolinas, giving the Cape Fear region more sunshine and moderate temperatures. After that, all eyes will likely turn to the Gulf of Mexico where there’s an increasing chance of activity.

Here’s the setup

As the remnants of our no-name system slide northeast, high pressure will build down from the north. The result this weekend will be drier air from the northeast and generally clear skies.

During the day Friday, clouds will dwindle across the region, with Fayetteville reaching a high of about 85. Things will still be a bit muggy, but conditions for prep football (75 degrees at kickoff) will be pleasant. Look for overnight lows of about 68.
