UMES Student From Bethesda Critically Injured In Head-On Wrong-Way Crash: Police

Delaware State Police identified 22-year-old Eric Staley, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Willow Grove, Pennsylvania resident Makayla Belton, 18, as the two who were killed in a fatal crash on Sunday in Seaford involving a Honda Pilot and Nissan Rogue.

Two others, the 22-year-old driver from DC, and a rear passenger, an 18-year-old from Bethesda, where also hospitalized with serious injuries, as was the 24-year-old Honda driver from Delaware.

According to state police, shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 6, the Rogue was heading south on Sussex Highway in Seaford when the Honda – heading northbound in the same southbound lane – struck them.

Impairment is believed to be a factor.

Following the fatal crash, UMES suspended all classes on Monday and Tuesday and scheduled a moment of silence at the SSC Courtyard at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 7.

“We grieve the loss of our UMES students and pray that those injured have a full recovery,” President Heidi Anderson stated.

“This tragedy has taken two promising young people at the very start of their adult lives and deprived our Hawk community, their families, and friends of the dynamic futures they were poised to live.”
