State runner-up run, league tourney-winning goal, more up for 910Preps Athlete of the Week

Another week of high school sports is behind us, and it’s time to recognize outstanding performances from Cumberland County student-athletes with the 910Preps Athlete of the Week award.

Nine nominees fill this week’s ballot, among them a regional champion runner who finished second in the state, a repeat soccer conference title game-winner, two TDs on three catches and much more.

Vote as often as you like until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7. Results will be announced Friday.

Bryan Martinez, Cape Fear boys’ soccer

The senior’s header with about 13 minutes to play turned out to be the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over Lumberton that gave Cape Fear its second straight United 8 Conference tournament championship. For the second year in a row, the Colts beat regular-season champion Lumberton in the league tournament championship, snapping a six-year title drought.
