35-year-old North Carolina state trooper passes away on New Year’s Eve

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper serving Cumberland County has passed away.

Trooper Anthony S. Godwin, 35, died Tuesday while off-duty, according to the NCHSP.

According to the NCSHP, Godwin graduated from the 129th Basic Highway Patrol School in Nov. 2012. He was stationed in Troop B, serving Cumberland, Brunswick, and Columbus counties.

“On behalf of the patrol family, I extend our heartfelt prayers and sympathies to the entire Godwin family as they cope during this tremendous loss,” Col. Freddy L. Johnson Jr., the NCSHP commander, said in a statement. “It is our sincere honor to embrace Trooper Godwin’s legacy as we reflect on his selfless service to our state and the lasting memories he has created throughout the years.”

Visitation for Godwin will be held Saturday from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Beaverdam Original Freewill Church in Chadbourn, which will be followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m.
