Raleigh, N.C. – Flash flooding is rapidly developing across central North Carolina this evening as up to 6 inches of rain have inundated parts of Moore and Chatham counties, prompting road closures and water rescues in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, Flash Flood Warnings have been extended until 9:15 p.m. Sunday for Alamance, Chatham, Durham, Lee, Orange, Randolph, Moore, Montgomery, and nearby counties. Radar shows the heaviest rainfall totals—more than 5 inches—centered over western Chatham and Moore counties, with another 2 to 4 inches possible through the evening.
Flooding is already impacting major roads in Sanford, Chapel Hill, Burlington, and Southern Pines. Emergency management officials in Moore County report widespread flooding, especially in low-lying areas and neighborhoods near creeks.
