The Durham County Sheriff’s Office is warning of an uptick in phone scams after deputies arrested two people Tuesday.
Crystal Charlene Brooks, 58, and Rudraksh Rawat, 20, both of Fayetteville, are each charged with felony conspiracy and obtaining property by false pretense, court records show. They’re accused of plotting to swindle a Durham County woman out of $32,000, arrest warrants state.
Deputies were called to the woman’s northern Durham County home after she reported Brooks and Rawat had arrived to collect money from her, according to a release from the sheriff’s office. The pair had allegedly called her the night before, claiming her bank account was compromised and she needed to place money into a “Bitcoin ATM” for “safekeeping,” the release stated…
