A Fayetteville restaurant has a new name and a new owner, but still serves up fresh sushi

From Pocky Cafe to Umi, a Fayetteville sushi and hibachi restaurant is finding its footing under new ownership.

When Lauren Liu, 28, quietly took over the former Pocky Cafe location at 5548 Yadkin Road two weeks ago on July 10, she said her goal wasn’t just to serve sushi, but to build something of her own. As the owner of her new restaurant, Umi, she said the location is currently undergoing a transformation, with the old Pocky Cafe signs still visible on the building as she awaits updated signage.

“I just want people to know we are open,” Liu said July 28. “We’re doing good so far, but a lot of people don’t know us yet.”

Despite the wait for signage, word of mouth is spreading on the Fayetteville Foodies Facebook page about Umi’s dishes. Liu said the restaurant offers a mix of sushi, hibachi, fresh fried fish, ramen and seafood boils…
