The Big Story
In September, Helene significantly impacted several western North Carolina communities, including one that may have gone unnoticed. Five correctional facilities were closed as a result of the storm, causing thousands of inmates to be transferred to other prisons across the state.
Mountain View Correctional Institution and Avery-Mitchell Correctional Institution are two of five facilities in the region that Helene forced to shut down operations due to power outages, raw sewage exposure and other hazards.
Just days after Helene hit the region, the Department of Adult Correction relocated 2,190 inmates from all five correctional facilities to prisons farther east in the state, contributing to a backlog of more than 500 newly sentenced people awaiting admission into the prison system.
