Gillis Hill Road Set for $17.5 Million Upgrade to Ease Traffic in Western Cumberland County

Following the award of a new contract by the N.C. Department of Transportation, Gillis Hill Road is set for another upgrade, as part of an ongoing effort to enhance traffic conditions and safety in western Cumberland County. According to a report from the N.C. Department of Transportation, the $17.5 million contract aims to widen a nearly mile-long segment of the road from two to four lanes.

The recent contract builds upon a previous expansion project awarded in 2022, focusing on the stretch of road extending west of Celtic Drive and into the Rockfish community of Hoke County. This section, almost entirely within the bounds of western Cumberland County, will see not just widening but also the addition of raised medians, sidewalks, and marked bicycle lanes and concrete curbs and gutters which are aimed to bolster the thoroughfare’s overall safety and usability.

Fayetteville’s Highland Paving Co., slated to begin the improvement work this fall, is tasked with the completion of the project by the summer of 2028, whereby all lanes are expected to be fully operational.
