Thurgood Marshall College Fund awards $16 million to HBCUs

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) has announced grants totaling $16 million to eight historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to advance capacity building and innovation.

Awarded as part of the Project HBCU Capacity Building, funded by the Lilly Endowment, the grants of $2 million each will enable the institutions to launch and expand programs designed to improve student enrollment, retention, and graduation rates; strengthen research capacity; modernize operations; and foster cross-campus collaboration. Selected institutions include Alabama State University in support of the ASU Momentum Initiative—Pathways, Pedagogy, and Progress; Fayetteville State University in support of its 30-60-90 Student Success Initiative; North Carolina Central University for the One-Stop Student Success Center; and Virginia State University in support of the VSU AI-Enabled Digital Transformation Initiative.

“Through these investments, we are equipping HBCUs to thrive as engines of economic mobility and academic excellence,” said TMCF president and CEO Harry L. Williams. “This initiative is not just about funding projects—it’s about building sustainable capacity so that our institutions can continue to lead, innovate and transform lives for generations to come.”…
