In an effort to conveniently meet the needs of those serving on the front lines, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) has rolled out a program aimed to ease the process for firefighters and first responders in obtaining necessary driver licenses for emergency vehicles. Announced by the NCDMV, this initiative stands to quickly bring essential services directly to these community guardians.
As part of the NCDMV’s Outreach Scheduling Assistance Program, local fire departments have been collaborating with the Division to set up on-site license testing. The arrangement aims to ultimately cut back on travel time and streamline access for emergency personnel who need to secure either a Class B commercial driver license (CDL) or Class A non-CDL credential. Mike Newsome, NCDMV Director of Driver Services, emphasized the value of this program, stating in a press release by the NCDMV, “This initiative ensures firefighters and other emergency responders can be quickly licensed to operate lifesaving equipment while continuing to serve their communities.”
The customization of the licensing process takes shape around the demands and the schedule of these emergency teams. DMV examiners are dispatched straight to the fire departments to conduct both written and road tests, utilizing department vehicles. This overhaul is designed to support not only the firefighters but it also stretches its assistance to law enforcement, EMS, and school bus drivers among others who serve in similar crucial roles…
