Jury finds Fayetteville man guilty of first-degree murder, judge gives him life sentence

A 21-year-old Fayetteville man was sentenced to life Oct. 31 after a Cumberland County jury found him guilty of a 2023 murder.

Jeavon McCoy, will spend the rest of his life in prison for the killing of Joseph Christopher Walton, 37.

His codefendant, Laurence James Williams, 23, of Fayetteville, pleaded guilty Oct. 23 to a charge of accessory after the fact and was sentenced to four years, 10 months to six years, 10 months in prison, according to court records. In exchange for the plea, charges of first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon were dismissed. He was given credit for the 27 months he spent in jail awaiting trial…
