Fayetteville Ceremony Honors Betty Green and Paige Smart for Contributions to Cumberland County Agriculture

On November 21, 2025, Betty A. Green was inducted into the Cumberland County Agricultural Hall of Fame. The ceremony took place at the Judge E. Maurice Braswell Cumberland County Courthouse in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The event was part of the annual Farm City celebration hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Fayetteville. Paige Smart was also recognized as the 2025 Cumberland County Farm Bureau Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year.

A portrait of Betty Green was unveiled at the ceremony. It will be displayed with those of past inductees in the I.B. Julian Auditorium at the Cumberland County Agriculture Center. Green grew up on a farm in Robeson County. She graduated as valedictorian from Hilly Branch School in 1964 and later earned degrees from North Carolina Central University and North Carolina State University. She worked as a Cooperative Extension 4-H agent in Cumberland County for 18 years and started several youth programs.

Green created the 4-H Embryology Program in Cumberland County Public Schools. This program teaches children biology by observing the life cycle of baby quail. It was later adopted statewide. Green also helped establish 4-H clubs at Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base. She founded the Cumberland County 4-H Alumni Association and the Leaders Association to support volunteers…
