Cumberland County tells Fuquay-Varina: Hands off Cape Fear River water

Multiple Cumberland County government agencies and other organizations are urging residents and elected officials to attend an upcoming meeting to speak against a request for the town of Fuquay-Varina to transfer water out of the Cape Fear River basin.

The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution Nov. 17 opposing the inter-basin water transfer request, and the Fayetteville City Council adopted a similar resolution at its Nov. 24 meeting.

“Our community’s future depends on a healthy Cape Fear River,” Fayetteville Mayor Mitch Colvin said in a Nov. 24 news release ahead of the meeting. “I stand with the Public Works Commission in opposing this inter-basin transfer as proposed because water drawn from the Cape Fear River Basin should stay in the Cape Fear River Basin. “…
