Lumbee Tribe receives $3.7M federal grant for ‘transformative’ Project CREATE initiative

PEMBROKE, N.C. (WBTW) — The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina announced it has received a $3.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

The Lumbee Tribe is launching Project CREATE (Career Readiness and Educational Advancement Through Native Youth Empowerment), something the tribe calls a “transformative initiative” funded through a Native Youth Community Project grant from the DOE. The five-year grant is worth $3,773,110.

A news release from the Lumbee Tribe says Project CREATE is designed “to address the interconnected socio-economic and educational challenges facing Native youth across the Lumbee Tribal Service Area, which includes Cumberland, Hoke, Robeson, and Scotland counties in southeastern North Carolina.”…
