Man senteneced to life in prison for stepfather’s shooting death

A Duplin County jury on Wednesday convicted a Roseboro man of shooting and killing his stepfather during a break-in at the man’s home in 2022, and a judge sentenced him to life in prison without parole.

Dexture Shyheme Smith, 28, was found guilty after an eight-day trial in Duplin County Superior Court of first-degree murder and murder committed pursuant to the commission of a felony, according to District Attorney Ernie Lee.

Judge Augustus Willis, resident Superior Court judge of Carteret, Craven and Pamlico Counties, sentenced Smith to life without parole for the murder, followed by a minimum of 73 months and a maximum of 100 months for burglary, and a minimum of 14-26 months for possession of a firearm by felon…
