WECT INVESTIGATES: Death at Smithfield Plant follows pattern of safety issues

TAR HEEL, N.C. (WECT) – An employee died Saturday at the Smithfield Foods pork processing plant in Bladen County, marking the second deadly incident at the facility in seven months.

Smithfield Foods confirmed the death on Monday but has not released the employee’s name or the cause of death. A company spokesperson said Smithfield notified the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and is working with investigators.
