Fayetteville fire station derailed by a build gone wrong | Opinion

A city of Fayetteville fire station under construction on Bragg Boulevard has been delayed for years, and a city lawsuit against the contractor is still winding its way through court.

Now the city has received dramatic news from a construction consultant, which is recommending in a new report that the city tear down Fire Station No. 4, brick by brick, because it is structurally unsound. Under this scenario, the city would have to start over from scratch. The Fayetteville City Council was set to discuss the project and hear from consultant ABS, which stands for Applied Building Sciences, at the council’s scheduled meeting Monday, Jan. 26, but that meeting was postponed due to ice and wintry conditions. The agenda item has been rescheduled for a special meeting Feb. 2.

The fire station project, awarded in May 2022 to W.B. Brawley Co. for $9.4 million, had already run up a bill of $4.3 million when construction was halted in late 2024…
