Cumberland County extends pause on animal shelter adoptions, intake

Cumberland County Animal Services announced Jan. 30 that it will extend its temporary pause on animal intake and adoptions for an additional two weeks.

The pause was initiated Jan. 17 in response to an increase in animals showing signs of upper respiratory illness, Animal Services said previously. The extension will allow shelter staff to continue efforts to contain and resolve the illness affecting shelter animals, Animals Services said in a Jan. 30 news release.

Since the initial pause, “Animal Services has made significant progress in identifying, isolating, and treating affected animals while strengthening preventive measures across the facility,” the release said. “Diagnostic testing has confirmed the presence of common canine respiratory pathogens. While these illnesses are treatable, their incubation periods and the ongoing identification of new cases require continued isolation to ensure a safe reopening.”…
