FAYETTEVILLE — A 17-year-old Jack Britt High School student was taken into custody after police say he fatally stabbed his mother and left her body in a recycling bin in the family garage on Tuesday. Investigators say the teen first phoned a grandparent and confessed, then called 911 himself and told the dispatcher he wanted to be arrested.
According to a probable-cause affidavit obtained by Law&Crime, the teen called one of his grandparents and said “he killed his mother.” The affidavit states he also called 911, told the dispatcher he “wanted to get himself arrested because he killed his mom,” and that officers arrived at the home just after 7 p.m.
What Officers Say They Found
When officers entered the home, they found 49-year-old Katharine Svaldi’s body partially inside a recycling bin in the garage, where she was pronounced dead at the scene, according to ABC11. Authorities also reportedly discovered a handwritten note on the kitchen table that they say laid out why the teen committed the crime. Police say he was still at the house, with blood on him and what investigators described as self-inflicted injuries.
Charges And Courtroom Schedule
Fayetteville police arrested 17-year-old Isaac Tracy and charged him with first-degree murder. He is being held without bond and is being prosecuted as an adult, WKRC Local 12 reported. Law&Crime noted that his next court hearing is scheduled for March 3.
Neighbors And School Reaction
Students who rode the bus with Tracy and neighbors in the Arran Lake subdivision said the news blindsided them. “Can you imagine… to kill your mom. That’s very sad,” one neighbor told ABC11.
Local reporting by WRAL identified Tracy as a Jack Britt High School student and a member of the school’s wrestling team…
