Fayetteville’s Salvation Army shelter operations getting back on track

Amid negotiations with the county, the Salvation Army decided to open the doors to its shelter on Alexander Street ahead of unseasonably cold January nights when ice hit the area and as much as 6 inches of snow fell Jan. 31.

Some eight months earlier, the Salvation Army had closed the doors of its Alexander Street shelter, with Salvation Army officials saying the closure was due to a lack of funding and staffing.

Former shelter residents told The Fayetteville Observer in April that they noticed mold and other unsanitary conditions they claimed made them sick, which the county noted during June and September visits…
