Man pleads to second-degree murder in 2024 Cumberland County killing

A Fayetteville man was sentenced to at least 12 years in prison recently for the fatal shooting of an Army veteran near Hope Mills in 2024.

Malik Lamont Jenkins-Leavell, 21, pleaded guilty March 4 to second-degree murder and was sentenced to between 12 and 15 years, five months in prison in the death of Lamarvion Tremayne Leviticus McKinnon, 21, according to Cumberland County court records. McKinnon served a little more than two years in the Army before being medically discharged, according to his family.

The indictment states that on June 4, 2024, Jenkins-Leavell shot McKinnon multiple times about 1:30 a.m. and stole an AR-style pistol from him.
