Roseboro gets first highway historical marker honoring Medal of Honor recipient Herring

ROSEBORO, Sampson County — A new North Carolina Highway Historical Marker now stands in Roseboro, honoring a hometown hero whose bravery during World War II earned the nation’s highest military distinction.

The marker, unveiled March 21, 2026, recognizes Rufus Geddie Herring, a U.S. Naval Reserve officer who received the Medal of Honor in 1945 for his actions during the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Herring, born in 1921, graduated from Davidson College before enlisting in the Naval Reserve in 1942. He served as an engineering officer aboard a landing craft in the Pacific, taking part in several key battles during the war…
