PARKTON, N.C. (WNCN) — The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a scam involving air conditioning units in which people are being robbed at gunpoint.
According to the sheriff’s office, the scams took place in the Everette Acres subdivision off Lake Upchurch Drive in Parkton.
Police said the scammer would make a Facebook Marketplace post in which the scammer would advertise air conditioning units at a discounted price. When a potential buyer would set up a meeting, the scammer would direct them to the back of the house and once there, approach the buyer with a gun and demand money.

The scammer would force the victims to hand over cash or transfer money via a Cash App account, according to police. The amount of money stolen from the victims ranges from $900 to $6,000.
