A symbolic funeral of the UNT System was held and attended by four students and three professors during the university’s Board of Regents meeting on May 21.
The students held an urn and signs during the meeting and gave speeches eulogizing the university in front of a hearse, stationed outside the university’s Medical Education and Training Building in Fort Worth. During the eulogies, students and professors spoke about their fears and issues with university leadership and direction.
“Why did we do all these drastic voluntary things?” said Valerie Martinez-Ebers, professor of political science and president of the university’s chapter of the Association of American University Professors. “And please tell us how cutting the Latino and Mexican-American studies program, or any of these identity programs, how much money did you save and where did you put it?”…
