SULPHUR SPRINGS, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — This Memorial Day, a history lesson was taking place at one Benton County Cemetery.
The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, a successor to one of the first veteran organizations after the Civil War, gathered at GAR Cemetery in Sulphur Springs, telling the history of the service members buried there.
They also talked about the history of Memorial Day and why the holiday is a necessity.

“We need to know that there were sacrifices made, whether it’s World War I, World War II, Vietnam, Korea, first Gulf War, there were sacrifices made,” Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War commander Joe Rainey said. “And we need to recognize that. We need to recognize our veterans for what they have accomplished and the liberties that they have made possible to us and to others also.”…
