Blue Envelope Bill clears Massachusetts State House

BOSTON, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – A “blue envelope” safety program for drivers with autism, proposed by a UMass student, is one step closer to becoming state law tonight.

A unanimous house vote passed the “Blue Envelopes Bill” requiring the Registry of Motor Vehicles to offer blue envelopes, like this one. It holds a driver’s license, registration, and insurance.

The back lists emergency contacts and simple instructions for police. The goal is to help officers better understand autism-related behaviors during a traffic stop — like avoiding eye contact — so they’re not misinterpreted.
