Houston flood risk rises Wednesday as heavy rainfall could target already saturated ground

Houston is all but guaranteed to get soaked Wednesday, with a 90% chance of rain given by the National Weather Service, but the primary concern is flooding from high rainfall rates on already saturated soils.

The latest atmospheric disturbance, a shortwave of low air pressure, has combined with a surge of moisture-rich air flowing in from the Gulf of Mexico to trigger widespread heavy rainfall across Southeast Texas, forecasters said. Here’s what we can expect:

“This highly moisture-rich environment will easily support scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms, with a risk for training cells as clusters progress east-northeast,” the weather service said in a forecast bulletin Tuesday.
