Universal Pictures has released the final trailer for Disclosure Day, marking Steven Spielberg’s return to sci-fi since 2005’s War of the Worlds and his first film as director following 2022’s The Fabelmans. The movie is set to debut in theaters and IMAX on June 12.
The trailer offers the most comprehensive glimpse yet into Spielberg’s latest project. The story centers on Daniel Kellner (Josh O’Connor), who goes on the run after stealing classified government files about extraterrestrial life. Meanwhile, Emily Blunt plays Margaret Fairchild, a Kansas City meteorologist who inexplicably begins speaking an alien language live on air.
As the trailer unfolds, it becomes clear that Daniel and Margaret share a mysterious past, possibly involving alien experimentation during their childhood. Colin Firth portrays a government official employing advanced mind-linking technology to suppress the truth, fearing societal upheaval if the secret leaks.
Visual elements in the trailer include iconic references such as crop circles, Area 51, Roswell, and animals-deer, cardinals, goats, and raccoons-acting unusually by staring directly at humans. The aliens themselves make their first on-screen appearance, bearing a striking resemblance to those in Spielberg’s classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
A particularly notable aspect of the trailer is Spielberg’s personal involvement on camera. He shares how his views on extraterrestrial life have evolved since making Close Encounters nearly fifty years ago.
Spielberg states, “I am much more inclined now than I was when I made Close Encounters to really believe that we’re not the only intelligent civilization in the universe.” He adds poignantly, “I used to say to myself, wouldn’t it be wonderful if all of this turned out to be true.
I’m now thinking, wouldn’t it be wonderful for people to know all of this is true.”
The timing of Disclosure Day aligns closely with recent developments in the public disclosure of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP). The U.S. government’s release of declassified documents and Navy pilot footage has heightened public curiosity, a cultural moment Spielberg acknowledges as a direct inspiration for the film. The official tagline-“the truth belongs to seven billion people”-resonates strongly in today’s climate.
It’s worth noting that the film’s third act remains a mystery, as it has been deliberately withheld from all marketing materials, suggesting there are significant surprises yet to be revealed. With its compelling narrative and timely themes, Disclosure Day promises to be a major event in this year’s cinematic landscape.
