Tentative trial date set for man accused of mother-in-law’s murder

A Lucas County judge set a mid-September trial date Wednesday for the Sylvania man charged with his mother-in-law’s beating death, although both the prosecutor and the defense lawyer hesitated to commit to it.

Pete Rost, representing defendant Jonathan Schmidt, said in Lucas County Common Pleas Court he had just received evidence discovery from the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office that included more than 38 videos and 1,800 pages of documents.

Michael Loisel, the chief of special prosecutions for the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office, said evidence still to be collected, and copied to the defense, includes analytical findings and investigative reports from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and extraction reports for relevant electronic devices…
