Mother Found Dead in Galway After Warning Police About Suspect

Additional Coverage:

Authorities in Galway have launched a murder investigation after a 31-year-old Iranian woman was found dead with severe throat injuries near the IPAS accommodation center in Clifden. The victim, a mother of two, had previously reported instances of violence involving the man now in custody.

The woman was discovered on Thursday morning close to Waterloo Bridge on Galway Road, after staff at the Waterloo House IPAS facility were unable to locate her. A man known to her was arrested nearby and is currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during the incident. Gardaí plan to question him on suspicion of murder once he is medically stable.

Reports indicate that the victim had filed complaints against the suspect in the past, leading to his relocation from the accommodation center about eight months ago. Both individuals were known to law enforcement, with a history of troubled interactions.

Known to friends at the IPAS center simply as “Athija,” the woman was a devoted mother to a five-year-old daughter and a nine-year-old son, both attending a local school in Clifden. Locals say she worked at a nearby hotel and had fled Tehran in search of a safer, better life for her family.

PK Joyce, manager of Waterloo House, paid tribute to the woman’s resilience and determination. He described her as a loving mother who worked hard to learn English and some Irish, fully embracing her new community.

“She was a lovely lady who really fit in here,” Joyce said. “She wanted to make a home for her children and succeeded in doing so. Her loss is deeply felt by all of us.”

The close-knit community at Waterloo House and the wider Clifden area have been left in shock. The principal of Scoil Mhuire, where the children are enrolled, issued a statement expressing condolences and highlighting the support being offered to students during this difficult time.

Gardaí conducted a search of the Owenglen River for evidence, as investigators believe the fatal attack occurred near the water. Officials confirmed that the scene remains preserved for forensic examination, and the post-mortem results will guide the ongoing investigation.

At this stage, authorities are not seeking anyone else in connection with the case and continue to follow a clear line of inquiry. The community mourns the tragic loss of a woman who had courageously sought a new beginning for herself and her family.
