Beloved charity founder critically injured in house explosion, murder-suicide attempt

KENT COUNTY, MI – Supporters have raised $14,000 for Lucy Preston, founder of nonprofit Busia’s Boutique, who was critically injured in a house explosion that authorities believe was caused by her husband, Douglas Preston.

Kent County Undersheriff Bryan Muir said the husband intentionally caused a natural-gas leak in the basement of their house early Tuesday, May 26, in Comstock Park and triggered an explosion.

The explosion happened around 4 a.m. at the couple’s two-story house on Rollaway Avenue NE near Seven Mile Road. Neighbor Tim Johnson and a teen rescued her from the fire after hearing her cries for help.

Police believe the 62-year-old husband intended a murder-suicide. A man’s body was found in debris just before noon. Positive identification is pending.
