Handicap violation leads to aggravated assault Wednesday

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A handicap violation led to an officer almost getting struck by a vehicle Wednesday night.

Around 9 p.m. Wednesday, an officer at a business near 12th Street and Kiwanis Avenue was investigating a handicap parking violation in the parking lot of that business, Sioux Falls Police Sgt. Aaron Benson said at Thursday’s briefing.

The officer spoke with the driver about the violation and the driver said that he wasn’t there very long and was just dropping somebody off.

The officer asked the driver for his driver’s license and the driver stated that he didn’t have one with him. Then the officer asked the driver to identify himself and that’s when the driver put the car in reverse, nearly hitting the officer. The vehicle ended up running into the officer’s patrol car.
